The Boston Marathon bombing happened three weeks into my job at Houston Community Newspapers. Although we were a weekly, hyper-local publication, I knew we needed to cover what was going on in Boston. Cory Stottlemyer, the Sugar Land/Missouri City reporter, and I reached out to our contacts and found people who were in Boston for the race and/or school and what it was like living there during the search.
As the story unfolded, Cory and I updated the story online to reflect new information, and we reached out to our sources for new comments on the ongoing manhunt. The piece that ran in the paper on April 25, 2013, was the result of our combined reporting and desire to provide important, national news on a local level.
